Asa Akira (born January 3, 1986) is the stage name of a Japanese American pornographic actress and model.Akira was born in New York City and lived in Japan between the ages of 6 and 13 where she attended international schools.Akira began working as a dominatrix shortly after graduating high school. She later worked as a stripper at the Hustler Club in New York. She entered the adult film industry after meeting pornographic actress Gina Lynn. Her first boy-girl scene was with Travis Knight for Gina Lynn Productions, after having already done several girl-girl scenes, mainly with Lynn. "Asa" is her real first name and "Akira" comes from the Japanese manga series of the same name. She received several award nominations for her role in David Aaron Clark's 2009 film, Pure, in which she plays a telephonist at a fetish dungeon who has an affair with the head-mistress' husband. In 2006–07 she was a regular on the Bubba the Love Spongeradio show and was known as the "Show Whore." In 2013 Akira and artist David Choe started a free online podcast featuring 90-minute episodes called DVDASA. It is aimed at a young adult audience, with its goal being to help youth with their problems related to sexuality, career, relationships, etc. In 2011, she became a Fleshlight Girl. Her Fleshlight won the 2012 TLA Raw Award for "Best Sex Toy". Complex Magazine ranked her at #4 on their list of "The Top 100 Hottest Porn Stars Right Now" and at #6 on their list of "The Top 50 Hottest Asian Porn Stars of All Time". She has also been placed on CNBC's yearly list "The Dirty Dozen: Porn's Most Popular Stars" in 2012 and 2013. Akira co-hosted the 30th Annual AVN Awards alongside pornographic actress Jesse Jane and comedian April Macie. She won the AVN Female Performer of the Year Award that night, making her the second Asian performer to ever win the award, after Asia Carrera. In 2013, she made her directorial debut with Elegant Angel's Gangbanged 6. She is currently working on her book which she describes as "not an autobiography, but it is autobiographical" that is scheduled for release in spring 2014.
